Surf's Up Bro', how do you make a unit in a sixties shopping precinct look RAD?

Project Intro

It's no secret that we're big old fans of the glide, sure as we've gotten older the long summer days of tucking into some barrels have become less frequent but like any self respecting coastal city dwellers we can still talk a good wave.

The Project

Shred or Dead's zany idea of opening a cafe in a white box in a 60s shopping precinct was made all the more interesting when the entire project dropped in the middle of a global pandemic. Cafes were shut. This obviously gave us time, time to agonise over a name, time to come up with a logo idea and of course time to think up how we could build a super simple cafe that may or may not even be open after 12 months and get it all open at some point when the government decided. Essentially a project without a deadline, or a really tight deadline, depending on where the government was on any given day.

As it turned out this would be a fairly easy interior design for us, budget was very small but other than a whole heap of imagery not much else was required, we located some classic boards and gave the place a simple coastal feel. Plan at the start was to just see if the client base existed and that suited us fine.

We derived the name from surfing legend Miki "Da Cat" Dora, allegedly a bit of a white supremacist on the side but this is Plymouth, why let a bit of a dark past get in the way of a good story. Miki Dora was known to ride a black surf board and so the Black and Da Cat combined to give us a name. The cat logo was the obvious choice, not because we lacked imagination at this point in the project, but maybe a bit of that. The logo was inspired by an old petrol logo from the 40s, and decked out in black and gold it looks great.

THE OUTCOME

What we delivered, from vision to execution

What became obvious once all the pandemic pandemonium died down was that this small cafe on a 60s shopping precinct was a busy little place. Business is brisk 7 days a week and with Plymstock located just a short drive from the beach the coastal vibe hit the locals just right
